Episode 26: Chin Peng's Final Testament: 'My Last Wish'

9月22日,陈平治丧委员会于曼谷达通寺(Wat That Thong)庄严公布其生前于2011年10月病危误传事件后立下的最后绝笔:《我的遗愿》(My Last Wish / Hajat Terakhir Saya)。

At dawn on September 16, 2013, Chin Peng (Ong Boon Hua, 1924–2013), the last Secretary-General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM), passed away in Bangkok, Thailand at the age of eighty-nine. On September 22, 2013, during the solemn memorial wake at Wat That Thong in Bangkok, the Funeral Committee publicly released his final testament, 'My Last Wish' (我的遗愿 / Hajat Terakhir Saya), written after erroneous media reports of his critical illness in early October 2011. In this historic trilingual testament in Chinese, English, and Malay, Chin Peng bade a final farewell to his fellow fighters, compatriots, and beloved motherland, expressed profound tenderness and remorse toward his two children who had endured decades of separation and hardship, and articulated his lifelong creed: 'In the final analysis, I wish to be remembered simply as a good man who could tell the world that he had dared to spend his entire life in the pursuit of his own ideals to create a better world for his people... It is my conviction that the flames of social justice and humanity will never die.' This episode preserves the complete trilingual text of 'My Last Wish,' Chin Peng's handwritten Chinese and English signatures, his pilgrimage portrait at Karl Marx's tomb in Highgate Cemetery, London, the September 2013 Bangkok funeral honours, including the royal wreath bestowed by Thai Princess Chulabhorn, the personal bow of former Thai Prime Minister General Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, and wreaths from CPM Chairman Abdullah C.D., Dato Yap Lim Sen, and Chin Peng's family, and the return of his ashes to Sitiawan and Ipoh, Perak.

第一章:《我的遗愿》(My Last Wish / Hajat Terakhir Saya):陈平最后绝笔原文

Chapter 1: "My Last Wish" (Hajat Terakhir Saya): Full Verbatim Text of Chin Peng's Final Testament

In early October 2011, several Southeast Asian media outlets erroneously reported that Chin Peng (Ong Boon Hua), Secretary-General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) residing in Bangkok, was hospitalized in critical condition. The repercussions of those reports convinced the eighty-seven-year-old revolutionary leader of the necessity of preparing a formal written testament while still lucid. Refusing to leave his life's meaning open to post-mortem distortion, he drafted a deeply personal farewell addressed to his fellow fighters, his compatriots, and the children from whom revolutionary clandestine duty had separated him for decades. Following his peaceful passing at Bangkok Hospital at 6:20 a.m. on September 16, 2013, Funeral Committee representative Lee Hock Tee formally read out and distributed this trilingual testament, titled 'My Last Wish' (我的遗愿 / Hajat Terakhir Saya) in Chinese, English, and Malay, at Wat That Thong on September 22, 2013.

Presented in Chinese, English, and Malay, 'My Last Wish' bears Chin Peng's authentic handwritten signature ('陈平' in Chinese and 'Chin Peng' in English), accompanied by a treasured archival photograph of Chin Peng standing beside the tomb of Karl Marx at Highgate Cemetery in London, inscribed with the words 'WORKERS OF ALL LANDS UNITE.' Together with the farewell letter itself, this visual pairing encapsulates seventy-four years of unwavering commitment from his boyhood awakening in Sitiawan, Perak to his final breath in Bangkok.

My dear Comrades, my dear Compatriots:
When you read this letter, I am no more in this world.
It was my original intention to pass away quietly and let my relatives handle the funeral matters in private. However, the repercussions of erroneous media reports of me in critical condition during October 2011 had persuaded me that leaving behind such a letter is desirable.
Ever since I joined the Communist Party of Malaya and eventually became its Secretary General, I have given both my spiritual and physical self in the service of the cause that my Party represented, that is, to fight for a fairer and better society based on Socialist ideals.
Now, with my passing, it is time for my body to be returned to my family.
I draw immense comfort in the fact that my two children are willing to take care of me, a father who could not give them family love, warmth and protection ever since their birth.
I could only return my love to them after I had relinquished my political and public duties, ironically only at a time when I have no more life left to give to them as a father.
It was regrettable that I had to be introduced to them well advanced in their adulthood as a stranger. I have no right to ask them to understand, nor to forgive.
They have no choice but to face this harsh reality. Like families of many martyrs and comrades, they too have to endure hardship and suffering not out of their own doing, but out of a consequence of our decision to challenge the cruel forces in the society which we sought to change.
It is most unfortunate that I couldn't, after all, pay my last respects to my parents buried in my hometown of Sitiawan, nor could I set foot on the beloved motherland that my comrades and I had fought so hard for against the aggressors and colonialists.
My comrades and I had dedicated our lives to a political cause that we believed in and had to pay whatever price there was as a result. Whatever consequences on ourselves, our family and the society, we would accept with serenity.
In the final analysis, I wish to be remembered simply as a good man who could tell the world that he had dared to spend his entire life in the pursuit of his own ideals to create a better world for his people.
It is irrelevant whether I succeeded or failed, at least I did what I did. Hopefully the path that I had walked on would be followed and improved upon by the young after me.
It is my conviction that the flames of social justice and humanity will never die.
Farewell, my dear Comrades!
Farewell, my dear Compatriots!
Farewell, my dear Motherland!

Chapter 2: Solemn Honours at Wat That Thong, Bangkok: Final Tributes from Thai Royalty, Former Prime Minister Chavalit, and Hundreds of Fellow Fighters (September 16–23, 2013)

Your children”,以及陈平在马来西亚的兄弟姐妹敬献的花圈(“IN LOVE MEMORY OF OUR DEAR BROTHER FROM...

At 6:20 a.m. on September 16, 2013 (coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of Malaysia Day), Chin Peng, the last Secretary-General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Malaya, passed away peacefully at Bangkok Hospital at the age of eighty-nine. In accordance with his wish that his body be returned to his family, his children and close associates established a solemn memorial hall at Sala 15 of Wat That Thong, the prominent royal monastery on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok. A three-day public wake was held from September 20 to 22, 2013, culminating in a grand funeral and cremation ceremony on September 23, 2013.

At the center of Sala 15 stood an ornate gilded Thai casket, fronted by a framed colour portrait of Chin Peng in a light green shirt smiling warmly amidst banks of white and yellow chrysanthemums, lilies, and purple orchids. Bestowing the highest mark of royal respect, Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Walailak of Thailand (patron of the four Chulabhorn Development Villages in southern Thailand where former Malayan People's Army fighters settled after 1989) conferred a royal ceremonial wreath bearing the crowned royal monogram 'จุฬาภรณ' (Chulabhorn), displayed on a gilded stand immediately beside the casket. This royal tribute underscored the enduring honour in which Thailand held Chin Peng's contribution to peace under the 1989 Haadyai Peace Accord.

During the three-day wake, General Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, who as Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army and Acting Supreme Commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces had signed the Haadyai Peace Accord alongside Chin Peng on December 2, 1989, and later served as Prime Minister of Thailand (1996–1997), personally came to Wat That Thong dressed in black mourning attire. Standing before the gilded casket and portrait of his former negotiating counterpart and friend, General Chavalit bowed deeply in silent tribute and presented a floral wreath jointly with his wife Khunying Phankhruea Yongchaiyudh ('พลเอก ชวลิต - คุณหญิงพันธ์เครือ ยงใจยุทธ'). Speaking to Malaysian and international journalists gathered at the hall, General Chavalit praised Chin Peng as a leader of absolute integrity who honoured every word of the 1989 peace settlement, bringing lasting stability and prosperity to the Thai-Malaysian frontier. General Naphol Boontap ('พลเอก ณพล บุญทับ'), Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister and Chairman of the Royal Initiative Project Working Group, likewise sent a formal wreath of condolence.

Hundreds of former CPM guerrillas from the four southern Thailand Peace Villages, along with old comrades, relatives of martyrs, and well-wishers from across Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, travelled to Bangkok to bid farewell to their Secretary-General. Ninety-year-old CPM Central Committee Chairman Abdullah C.D. sent a floral tribute inscribed 'Abdullah C.D.'; prominent Ipoh philanthropist, author, and close family friend Dato Yap Lim Sen ('DATO YAP LIM SEN & ASSOCIATES') and the Perak Old Friends Association ('霹雳老友联谊会') also presented wreaths. Directly before the altar stood the deeply moving floral tributes from Chin Peng's family: the wreath from his two children inscribed in English and Chinese, 'In loving memory, our dear father. Your children / 永远怀念亲爱的父亲 孝男孝媳 孝女,' and the wreath from his siblings inscribed, 'IN LOVE MEMORY OF OUR DEAR BROTHER FROM... YOUR BROTHERS & SISTERS,' answering the poignant words of paternal love and remorse in 'My Last Wish.' On the afternoon of September 23, 2013, as old comrades stood in solemn ranks bowing and singing 'The Internationale' through tears, Chin Peng's family carried the ceremonial censer, lamp, and portrait at the head of the golden casket in the final cremation procession.

Chapter 3: True to the Cause, Returning to the Motherland: Ashes Brought Back to Sitiawan, Perak and Scattered Across Sea and Mountain (November 2013)

(True to the cause, always. Lives may end, but their legacy lives on.),在曼谷火化大典圆满礼成后,陈平的亲属与生前挚友、老战友们便开始周密筹划迎护陈平骨灰重返故乡霹雳州的庄严行动。

In the tenth paragraph of 'My Last Wish,' Chin Peng recorded the deepest personal sorrow of his life: 'It is most unfortunate that I couldn't, after all, pay my last respects to my parents buried in my hometown of Sitiawan, nor could I set foot on the beloved motherland that my comrades and I had fought so hard for against the aggressors and colonialists.' Even though Clause 3 of the December 2, 1989 Haadyai Peace Accord explicitly guaranteed Malaysian-born CPM members the right to return and settle in Malaysia, the Malaysian authorities not only blocked his legal bids to return during his lifetime, but upon his death in September 2013 went so far as to ban his body and even his cremated ashes from entering the country.

Yet no administrative ban could sever a native son's bond with his homeland or deter his comrades from fulfilling his last wish. / True to the cause, always. Lives may end, but their legacy lives on.,' Chin Peng's relatives and trusted comrades quietly organized the homecoming of his ashes to Perak after the Bangkok cremation. A rare historical photograph from November 2013 when Chin Peng's ashes returned to Perak captures this historic moment: relatives and veteran comrades walking solemnly along the shophouse street of Sitiawan, Perak, carrying Chin Peng's ashes in a tray draped with red cloth right past his family's ancestral shophouse.

To prevent official interference, this escort team composed of old friends and relatives guarded the operation in strict confidence until every rite of homecoming was fulfilled and subsequently disclosed to the public in Ipoh. Carrying the red-draped urn, they brought Chin Peng home to his childhood shophouse in Sitiawan, paid homage before the archway of the Sitiawan Kwong Fook Cemetery where his parents lie buried, and scattered his ashes with flower petals into the sea off Lumut and across the forested slopes of the Titiwangsa Main Range near Chemor, Ipoh, where he and his comrades had fought for national liberation. At long last, the revolutionary who dared to spend his entire life pursuing a fairer and better world returned forever to the mountains and seas of his beloved motherland.
